Project Descriptive Name: A.S. Sequential Heuristic Autonamer Tree
Project Unix Name: asshat
License: GPL
Registration description: The A.S. (Actionscript) Sequential Heuristic Autonamer Tree helps content authors maintain a manually versioned directory hierarchy, arbitrarily deep, of actionscript (.as) and movie (.fla) files, and is intended for developers using Macromedia Flash. Within Flash it is quite common to use numbered naming schemes for versioning/backup purposes — although versioning tools like CVS now work on OS X, they are uncommon among multimedia artists.

Flash includes its own “versioning” system but, as any developers using it will attest, it frequently crashes, leaving files in their previously versioned state without the last set of changes.

This lack of versioning tools, combined with the reality that a single click in the wrong place can wreck a file, necessitating a revert to the previous version, has made it common for developers to manage directories of their movie assets with numbered versions of each file, eg. main-movie-v01.fla, main-movie-v02.fla, etc.

This A.S. Sequential Heuristic Autonamer Tree finds the most recently numbered version of each .fla and .as file, look for the rendered swf files corresponding to the source FLA, find the most recent version, and copy it to the canonical name, so internal flash includes will always point to the most recently rendered version of each movie in your project.

code tested on freeBSD and Mac OS X.
